My Valentines Way

Valentines day is right around the corner, and as a florist my view is not so pretty. With high gouge prices and less than perfect product, it’s sometimes hard to provide quality to clients. My best advise is save the roses for a birthday or anniversary. On valentines day buy a beautiful plant. My choice is an orchid; normally they are expensive but on Valentines day they are less than roses. Most people say orchids are too hard to take care of, but after many years of trial and error and visiting orchid growers I have found the easy keys to keeping mine alive for several years now. So for this Valentine, I am here to share with you the tricks and tips to making this plant a part of your Family. Here is a step-by-step to repotting your orchid when your special someone brings yours to you. Make sure to read all the way to the bottom for the most secretive, crazy but proven way to get yours to re-bloom.

Step 1:  You need a ceramic pot, plastic cup, watering can and a bark/charcoal orchid mix (buy at local greenhouse or online)

img_1713

Step 2: Orchids do not like to be in soil. Many places that sell you orchids will ship them in soil to help last until the destination. Please, buy a bark/charcoal orchid mix. The roots need to breath and stay away from too much moisture.  img_1720

Step 3: turn your plastic cup upside down to make a platform for your orchid to sit on.

img_1714

Step 4: If your orchid has dead dried roots cut them off so the new growth has room.

img_1716

Step 5: Gently set the mass/cluster of roots on top of the plastic cup and let them cascade down to the bottom of the pot.

img_1718

Step 6: Fill in and around the roots with the bark until it reaches the top of the pot

img_1719

Step7: water so that the water flows down to the bottom of the pot. As the water evaporates the roots will soak in the water from the humidity in the air. Don’t fill up to where the roots are, just below. Orchid come from humid hot places. I’ve learned the hard way to not follow the “set an ice cube on the roots”, you just end up with frozen and dead roots. Follow these steps and you won’t have to worry about watering.  The leaves will tell you when it needs water by starting to droop.

img_1721

Step 9: I fertilize with a orchid food or flowering plant food once a year and only when the plant is not blooming.

The secret, and proven trick, to getting a orchid to re-bloom came straight from a orchid grower. When asked, she said, “Orchids are a very jealous plant. Stick a silk or fake stem of orchid flowers in with the beautiful green leaves and it will start to re-bloom.” I’ve shared this trick with many friends and it truly works. Just keep your plant watered, don’t move it from its well lit space and it will stay very happy.

Happy Planting

Old World Elegance

A warm fall day was perfect setting for Marissa and Daniels wedding. The Sweet ceremony took place at Our Lady of Presentation and the reception was held at Longview Mansion. A beautiful cake was made by Classic Cakes and matched the invite motif perfectly. We filled the huge chandeliers with garden greens to bring a outside feel in. Stone urns overflowed with soft grasses and blooms and her bouquet was filled with texture of grasses and air plants along with navy berries. All captured by the stunning work of Alea Lovely. Congrats to this Amazing Couple.

A Lakeside View

This stunning wedding on Lake Quivira was such a delight. Jill and Justin’s ceremony took place in a quaint chapel and the reception held on the patio of the Lake Quivira Country Club. All included with a beach side fire pit and sand for dancing in. Their sweet daughter was the flower girl and the day was spent with immediate family and loved ones only. Flowers and garland draped on bars and tables with candles flickering in the setting sun made for a picture perfect day. We had such a pleasure spending it with this lovely couple. jillandjustinweddingday-78jillandjustinwedding-22jillandjustinwedding-30jillandjustinwedding-37jillandjustinweddingday-323jillandjustinwedding-69jillandjustinweddingday-48jillandjustinweddingday-329jillandjustinwedding-136jillandjustinweddingday-151jillandjustinweddingday-187jillandjustinengagement-42jillandjustinwedding-101jillandjustinweddingday-1jillandjustinweddingday-4jillandjustinweddingday-27jillandjustinweddingday-32jillandjustinweddingday-34jillandjustinweddingday-64jillandjustinweddingday-71jillandjustinweddingday-81jillandjustinweddingday-121jillandjustinweddingday-130jillandjustinweddingday-134jillandjustinweddingday-132jillandjustinweddingday-192jillandjustinweddingday-229jillandjustinweddingday-201jillandjustinweddingday-239jillandjustinweddingday-330jillandjustinweddingday-331jillandjustinweddingday-332jillandjustinweddingday-333jillandjustinweddingday-334jillandjustinweddingday-335jillandjustinweddingday-337jillandjustinweddingday-338jillandjustinweddingday-339jillandjustinweddingday-343jillandjustinweddingday-344jillandjustinweddingday-342

Golden Grasses and Blue Skys

P E R S O N A L I T Y !!! that is the best way to describe this awesome couple. Laura and Jason’s day was filled with close family and friends at a private secluded residence. The ceremony took place in a grassy field with a crystal lake for a view. Guests sat on blankets with copper buckets of cool drinks and aromatic bundles of eucalyptus and branches of cotton. A golden circle of grasses framed them to match the look and feel of the surrounding plains. For dinner the barn was hung  with party lights and tables were filled with leather guest seating drink mats and white clay plates/ candle holders designed by Convivial Production . They were then filled with yummy garden greens. Copper Moscow mule mugs lined every table. Even the table numbers hung from chairs in tin lettering. Every detail was accounted for. After dinner guest were treated to a night of dancing under the stars on the back patio. Laura’s color palette was a mix of light dusty blues and copper blush. Her wild and free flowers fit perfectly with this wild flower bride. Such a joy to work with her and this wonderful team of vendors. Layers of Lavander

Christina weddings was held at the beautiful historic Elms Hotel and Spa. Her colors of lavender, blush and grays accent her family heirlooms of silver vessels, tea pots and saucers. Lush vintage blooms and textures of berries and herbs filled her bouquets and tables. Photos were shot by Dimartinophoto. Such a sweet day to be apart of. Congrats Christina and Aron.

Iridescent Color

We love our brides and clients. But there is no greater complement then when a fellow wedding professional seeks you out for their own wedding. They have a vast list of vendors that they have worked with and to be chosen for their special day is such an honor.  Kyndall is a great photographer and she has worked in this industry for some time now.  So when she came to me with her ideas of vivid, bold and lush blooms we were so excited to be on board. Her day was filled with corals, plums, pinks, oranges and golds. We used her love for citrus and fruits in her decor and a mix of colored glass filled her head table. Kyndall’s smile is intoxicating and she brings such joy to everyone around her and we were blessed to be apart of her and Jordan’s Day. Pics by Alea Lovely venue Willow Creek Venue.

Rich in Love

Ashley and Ryan got married on a slightly cool spring day but the warmth and love that poured from all their family and friends melted my heart. Getting to know this family and working with Ashley’s sister Meghan of Meghan Savage Photo for some time, has lead to a wonderful friendship with them all. So we were so delighted when the big day came around. The pallet of this wedding was so rich with Navy, White and a touch of blush. We build our birch arbor and draped it with pear tree blossoms. Photographer for the day was Rusty with Waldron Photography Co. so Meghan could enjoy the day with her sister. Venue was River Market Event Space
